After much speculation, Gorillaz have been announced as the replacement for previous headlining act U2 at this year's Glastonbury. The virtual band will take the place of the Irish rockers after they were forced to cancel their appearance due to Bono’s emergency spinal surgery.

Early reports suggested the likes of David Bowie, Kylie Minogue and The Rolling Stones had all been approached to fill in for U2 with Coldplay as the book makers’ favourites. However, it came as a surprise that when festival organiser, Michael Eavis, announced that the Damon Albarn led band would be stepping in for U2.

Last year Damon Albarn headlined the festival with a reunited Blur. This year he and the rest of the Gorillaz will be joining a stellar line up that includes Stevie Wonder, Muse, Dizzee Rascal, Scissor Sisters, Shakira and Florence and The Machine.
